layer (of graphics)
Several layers of images can be combined together in graphics to make a new single image. The relationship between the layers is controlled by their alpha channels.
leadership
The employment of appropriate management styles to ensure and maintain progress of a team towards common goals.
lean back
Like watching television, at a distance, as distinct from lean forward and sometimes known as couch potato.
lean forward
Like using a computer, close to the screen, as distinct from lean back.
learning styles
Part of the theory of learning, which indicates that people develop preferred ways of learning. This has implications for designing learning materials so that people can process the information in ways appropriate for their preferred style.
letters patent
Formal term for the document that defines a patent.
library music
Recorded music produced especially for use in film television and other audio-visual productions. Usually available for licence based on a standard rate card. Also known as production music.
limiter
In audio, an electronic circuit that automatically controls volume to stop short peaks of volume exceeding a certain amount.
link
On the web a word, phrase or graphic on a web page that, when clicked by the user, sends an HTTP request to the server, usually calling up another web page. Sometimes referred to as a hot link.
load balancing
Sharing the traffic on a website between a number of server computers in order to handle very high numbers of hits. See also scalability.
localization
Using translation and cultural adaptation to produce software and support materials ready for use in particular languages and cultures.
location-aware or location-based services
Services provided to a mobile telephone which take account of where the phone is located, to offer lists of nearby restaurants for example.
log
Record kept by a web server of every HTTP request it receives, with details including the time and date, who asked for the page and how much data was transferred. Strictly speaking, these logs should be referred to as access logs to distinguish them from others such as error logs.
log analysis
Analysis of the log records of a website into meaningful data that help the site owners make decisions about the further design of the site based on knowledge of present use.
look and feel
Common name for the interface of an application. See also interface.
lossy
In compression this means that the original data cannot exactly be retrieved from the compressed version. This does not necessarily mean that the effects of the compression are visible or audible.
luminance
The black-and-white or monochrome part of a colour television signal or other image.
